Tietze’s syndrome Etiology / Epidemiology / Natural History
- Benign, selflimiting nonsuppurative swelling of the anterior chest wall.
- May have sudden or gradual onset.
- Generally unilateral.

- Most commonly involves the second, third, and fourth costosternal articulations, with the sternoclavicular joint less commonly involved.
Tietze’s syndrome Clinical Evaluation
- nonfluctuant, firm, tender swelling involving the articulations of the costosternal and/or sternoclavicular joints.
Tietze’s syndrome Xray / Diagnositc Tests
- AP view, apical lordotic view, serendipity view. Normal
- CT helpful in differential diagnosis. Normal in Tietze's syndrome.
- MRI: normal
- Labs: normal ESR, CRP. WBC
Tietze’s syndrome Classification / Treatment
- Generally self-limited. Pain resolves within days to weeks. Swelling may persist for months or years.
