Radial Longitudinal Deficiency ICD-9
- 755.26 Longitudinal deficiency, radial, complete or partial
Radial Longitudinal Deficiency Etiology / Epidemiology / Natural History
- Failure of formation of the radial side of the forearm, wrist and hand
- Rare
Radial Longitudinal Deficiency Anatomy
- Deficiencies in radial artery, median or radial nerves, frlexor carpi radialis
Radial Longitudinal Deficiency Clinical Evaluation
- Elbow flexion contracture
- Radial deviation of the wrist
- Thumb aplasia/hypoplasia
Radial Longitudinal Deficiency Xray / Diagnositc Tests
- A/P and lateral of forearm and wrist.
Radial Longitudinal Deficiency Classification / Treatment
- Bayne I
-delayed appearance of distal epiphysis and shortened radius -Treatment: stretching exercises, serial casting of splinting beginning shortly after birth.
- Bayne II
-deficient proximal and distal radial growth, very short radius -Treatment: stretching exercises, serial casting of splinting beginning shortly after birth. Consider progressive distraction lengthening (Sabharwal S, JPO 2005;25:377).
- Bayne III
-parital absence of the radius, geenerally distal -Treatment: centralization of the carpus done at 6-12 months of age. Consider index finger pollicization for patients with thumb hypoplasia (Goldfarb CA, J Hand Surg 2002;27A:118).
- Bayne IV
-radius completely absent -Treatment: centralization of the carpus done at 6-12 months of age. Consider index finger pollicization for patients with thumb hypoplasia (Goldfarb CA, J Hand Surg 2002;27A:118).
Radial Longitudinal Deficiency Associated Injuries / Differential Diagnosis
- Thrombocytopenia-absent-radius
- Fanconi's anemia
- Holt-Oram syndrome
- Vertebral-anal-cardiac-tracheal-esohpageal-renal-radial limb (VACTERRL) association.

- Recurrent deformity
- Limited hand function
