Semimembranosus Tendinitis Etiology / Epidemiology / Natural History
- Most commonly occurs in male athletes during their fourth decade of life.
- More common in running and cycling
- May occur after TKA, generally in patients with large varus deformity correction at surgery.
- Related to recurrent irritation of the semimembranosus tendon as it slides over the medial corner of the medial femoral condyle

Semimembranosus Tendinitis Clinical Evaluation
- Postero-medial knee pain.
- Pain along the semimembranosus insertion in the tibial. May be worse with stairs or deep knee bend.
- Tenderness over the pes anserine / tibial sertion of the semimembranosus.
Semimembranosus Tendinitis Xray / Diagnositc Tests
- Knee xrays normal
- MRI may demonstrate increased signal along the semimembranosus tendon.
- Consider diagnostic injection of local anesthetic into Semimembranosis insertion. Relief of pain indicates semimembranosus tendinitis
Semimembranosus Tendinitis Classification / Treatment
- Ice, Nsaids, Hamstring stretching and stengthening, consider formal physical therapy.
- Consider release/excision of the reflected portion of the semimembranosus tendon in patients who have failed conservative treatment.
